HYPERBOLIC HATS
There are six hats in the HyperHat Collection. The patterns are available individually or as a collection.
They are all very easy to make and use basic knit or crochet stitches. Three are knitted, three are crochet. Each pattern includes ideas for variations.
The hats are named in honour of famous women mathematicians. and all incorporate an element of hyperbolic knitting or crochet as pioneered by Daina Taimina.

CreativeCrocheter entered this colourful version of Theano in the county fair and got a 1st place (blue ribbon) for the crocheted hat category AND a Champion for the clothing categories!

- Ada Lovelace (1815 -
1852) - considered to be the first computer programmer. - Elena Cornaro Piscopia (1646-
1684) - lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Padua. The first woman in the world to receive a doctorate degree. - Florence Nightingale (1820-
1910) - a statistician who used her knowledge to improve society. In 1858 she became the first female member of the Statistical Society. - Hypatia of Alexandria (370-
415 CE) - the first woman to make a substantial contribution to the development of mathematics. She was killed by a fanatical Christian sect. - Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850-
1891) - the first major Russian female mathematician. The first woman appointed to a chair at a modern European university. (Changed her name to Sonya.) - Theano of Crotona-
wife of Pythagoras (c 600 BCE) - a mathematician in her own right. She is said to be the author of a treatise on the Golden Mean. She became head of Pythagoras’ School after his death.
