The hat collection

>

These hats are knitted on the Woolly Thoughts principle. They are in garter stitch and knitted to very simple mathematical rules which need no tension square before you begin. They can be made in any yarn to fit anyone. The examples shown are all made according to the same basic plan.
The hats, from top left:
  • A soft version in camouflage colours, with a small turn-back brim.
  • An eye-catching red and black hat with matching mittens.
  • Shredded Marks and Spencer carrier bags - just to prove it works with any 'yarn'.
  • The basic shape in chenille with an added floppy brim.
  • The basic shape using the centre of the 'Infinity' design, and stretched over a plastic canvas base.
  • A black version, flecked with gold lurex and having large gold beads knitted in.

Instructions for these hats are available in a booklet called Let It Go To Your Head.

These hats show some of the variety of designs which can be achieved from the traditional beret, or tam, shape. They are knitted in the round in stocking stitch. Some use up left-over yarns. Others have lettering or other designs worked into them.

Three hats using plastic canvas. One is knitted then stretched over the canvas and caught in place with a few stitches. The others are worked on plastic canvas in theusual way, then lined with silk.
