Check Mate has 64 squares. It was made on a knitting machine using a garter carriage.

The playing pieces for the chess game were knitted with very thick yarn made from the yarn used for the board mixed with other yarns. They have the initial letters of the pieces embroidered on. When they are turned over they are plain so could be used for draughts. They are kept in their own cushion-shaped bag when not in use.
