Next I tuned my attention to creating an illusion version of Cubism. The result is not much like the original but it definitely gives the impression of steps going up and down.
When you look directly at the afghan you will see squares and zigzags made from alternating stripes in two colours. As you move round the afghan you will see different effects. Sometimes the tops of the cubes will appear in the light colour; sometimes they will be in the dark colour.
The basic motif is small. There are never more than 20 stitches on the needle at a time. Once you have grasped the basic idea, you can go in any direction you want. The joining is done as you go. You could probably change colours too but I haven’t tried this as I’m not sure whether it will enhance, or detract from, the illusion.
