A representation of binary numbers. We usually count using the system known as Base 10, using the digits 0 to 9. The binary system is sometimes called Base 2 and uses the digits 0 and 1. It is far more common than some might imagine as it is the system used inside computers and other electronic equipment.
The afghans shown in the photo were knitted with DK yarns. The pattern includes instructions for converting to crochet or machine-knitting. It can be made to any size you want.
