Have I arrived in knitting yet? I don’t think I know.

I am definitely doing much less of the actual process of knitting but never a day goes by without a knitting-related email from someone somewhere in the world. I don’t think I will ever go back to producing huge numbers of knit and crochet items but the knitting in my head still leads me onward.

I have come to realise that my function on the knitting scene has been to make others think for themselves. On the last day of 2006 the following message appeared on a knitting list, in response to a question about ‘modular knitting’ books. This was not on my list and the author could not have known that I would read it:

No Pattern Knits by Pat Ashforth & Steve Plummer

It is actually quite a bit different to the other modular books available in that the shapes are made by increasing/decreasing only at the end of the row, and knitting until your shape matches the dimensions of the printed shape template in the book - that way you can use any yarn, any needles, as there’s no swatching needed using Pat & Steve’s method.

The geometric shapes that are covered in No Pattern Knits are many & varied, and the book offers plenty of ideas for putting together different shapes to create dimensional (rather than flat) pieces too.

... the instructions are intended so that any age of knitter could use the methods in the book. The book is a very good jumping off point to putting together your own ideas for designs based on the methods used.

If we get that response from just a handful of people, I have succeeded. Whether that means I have ‘arrived’ I just don’t know. I don’t think so - but the story has to end somewhere ...

... Or does it?
