Twists And Turns
 |
This page shows our collection of mobile creations, items which can be twisted into different shapes.
The Jacob's Ladder, for instance, can be quite fascinating. The one shown on the left here is made from plastic canvas, stitched over with wool. The other one is made from shiny card. |

| Here are four flexagon cushions. The haxagonal one, called a hexaflexagon, is the most well known. There are small triangles in nine different colours. By twisting the flexagon, six of the colours can be brought to the centre on one side or the other.
The grey square flexagon only has three colours. It is stuffed with wadding and a sheet of plastic canvas to keep it stiff. The purple one has more layers, made of plastic canvas and a thin layer of wadding covered in fabric. It is the least comfortable of the four.
The green and yellow one is the most complicated. It can be folded into a number of different shapes. |

Here are some three-dimensional versions. Each is a cube made up from six smaller cubes joined so that they can be folded and unfolded. The solid one covered in photographs was bought when we were on holiday in Norway. The others are made of plastic canvas.
One uses twelve different colours of canvas while the other used white canvas stitched over with wool in twelve colours. When they are folded up, six of the colours are visible on the outside and the other six are hidden. In three moves, a large cube can be formed with the six previously hidden colours on the outside. |

This afghan is made up of small squares buttoned together edge-to-edge. When the buttons are undone, the squares rotate so that they are only joined at their corners. This process causes the blanket to incerease to twice its original area. |

| This design is known as the Milkman's wallet. It is similar to the Jacob's ladder in construction. Money can be dropped inside and when the wallet has been closed and opened again, the money has moved to behind the straps.
Two of the wallets here are made from plastic canvas and two from card. The fifth one in the bottom right-hand picture was bought. |
