Extract from Sound's strange to me:

'They got the name because baabers' shops were good places to sing in. It was something to do with the acoustics.'

'What is an acoustic?' I asked.

'I don't know exactly what they are but I know they don't live in fields. They always live indoors and their favourite places are rooms with tiled walls. That's why they liked the baabers' shops. You can't see them in there but they join in with the si nging and make it sound better,' said Maa.

'They're like beetles!' I shrieked, beginning to understand at last.

When I was younger Maa used to sing me to sleep with a song called 'Sheep loves ewe'. It was written and sung by four beetles, who were world famous. I had often wondered how anything as small as a beetle could become so famous. Acoustics must be even smaller because they can't be seen at all.

Before Maa had chance to say anything, I'd thought of something else, 'Are there any living in the farmhouse?'

'Are there any what?' Maa was confused now.

'Acoustics! Mr. Mann must let them live in his tiled bathroom. That's why his singing always sounds better when he's having a bath. It's not him, it's the acoustics,' I said.

'You're probably right. Singing always sounds better in the bath.'

I didn't want to argue but the last time I tried singing in the bath I got a mouthful of sheep dip and my plastic duck has never been the same since.
