An Afghan is a small blanket which can be used in the car, at a picnic, as a decorative throw, or simply for keeping warm.
The afghans in our collection have the added advantage that most can also be used as wall-hangings. Each depicts a
mathematical idea or a 3D effect. The present collection can be seen here but new
designs are continually being added.
For most of our afghans, we have produced a booklet which clearly explains how to make it in a mixture of words and pictures.
The afghans vary in size and shape but most are between 4 and 5 feet wide and between 4 and 6 feet long. Apart from the few
which are crochet, they are all worked in garter stitch using very simple methods, with only one yarn being used at a time.
Most use Double Knitting or Aran yarns and many have instructions for converting to other yarns.

These are not conventional knitting patterns. Each booklet also contains some mathematical information about the
design. You are not restricted to using a particular brand of yarn. Choose your own from your local wool shop.

A Blanket Canvas
This book tells the stories behind all 48 of the afghans
that we produced from 1996 to 2001. It does not explain in detail how to make the blankets but explains why they were
designed and the concepts which they are intended to illustrate.

The instructions for making the Tilting At Windmills afghan can also be downloaded for free as a .pdf file here.
